It's on the Way

The kibitzers looked at one another and all nodded in agreement...we had all finally gone insane. I sat South, with the dealer on my right. It was the bidding that convinced them, although it proceeded straight forward. 3D-4D-5D-6D-7D-Dbl. That's right...3 Diamonds, 4 Diamonds, 5 Diamonds, 6 Diamonds, 7 Diamonds, Double.
Okay, so you want an explanation. We were vulnerable and they were not. East looked at his puny cards and his long Diamond suit, and conceding that the hand belonged to us he pre-empted at 3 Diamonds. I held a powerhouse with game-in-hand, and a void in Diamonds with length in both majors. The cue-bid of 4 Diamonds shows exactly that, and requests partner to bid his best and longest major.
West agrees with his partner, and makes a sacrifice at 5 Diamonds. My partner's hand is worth 2 tricks, and he sees that if I can make game with my hand then we should be in slam. But he has no choice between Spades and Hearts, as he holds 4 cards in each suit. He bids 6 Diamonds to request that I choose the suit at the 6-level. East now concedes the slam and sacrifices at 7 Diamonds.
East-West made a fine score on the board as 6 in a major was a lay-down. But some kibitzers are still skeptical.
