PLAY OF THE HAND

You have losers only in Spades and Diamonds. If the Spade finesse wins you can afford to lose a trump and will play to guard against a 4-1 split.

If the QS loses however, you can't lose any trump tricks so you must hope they are 3-2 and you can finesse the Jack successfully. So you must immediately take the Spade finesse to find out how to play trumps.

PLAY OF THE HAND

This is why it is so important to count tricks and make a plan before you start playing.

1)   The 10H lead is won with the Queen.
2)   A low Spade is led and the QS wins!
3)   Declarer cashes the KD in dummy.

PLAY OF THE HAND

Since the QS won you can afford to lose 1 trump trick. Now to play the trumps safely so nothing goes wrong in case there is a 4-1 split.

4)   Declarer comes to hand with the AC.
5)   Declarer leads a low Diamond, West discards, JD from dummy, and East wins with the QD.
6)   East returns a Club and dummy's Queen wins.

PLAY OF THE HAND

Now it's time to get the rest of the trumps in. This will be easy since you know West showed out last time when East won their Queen.

7)   Lead the 6D to East's 7 and your 9.
8)   Draw the last trump with your AD.
9)   Lead the 7S to the board's Ace.

WRAPUP OF THE HAND

Trumps are the main problem in this hand and many others. When the QS holds you assume trumps are breaking 4-1 and make a safety play so they cannot win more than 1 trump trick since you don't know who will have the long trumps.
